PANDAN TREE INTRODUCTION

Pandan leaves, also known as screwpine leaves or aromatic ginger leaves, are referred to in English as pandan. Their scientific name is Pandanus Amaryllifolius. They are predominantly found in hot and humid tropical regions.

Pandan leaves are herbaceous plants with short, straight stems that cluster together rather than growing individually. Their blade-like leaves typically measure around 30-40cm in length and 3-4cm in width. The leaves are green with a distinct aroma reminiscent of glutinous rice. The undersides of the leaves are darker green and sometimes coated with a fine layer of short hairs. The plant does not produce fruits or flowers.

Chemical constituents include water, cellulose, 3-methyl-2(5H)-furanone, 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline, glycosides, alkaloids, among others.

In culinary practices, pandan leaves serve as a common ingredient in various recipes, often used to infuse aroma and impart color to dishes such as jellies, cakes, and ice cream. Additionally, pandan leaves have multiple applications in traditional medicine, particularly in supporting the treatment of certain conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and more.
