GREEN TEA EXTRACT LIQUID FOR COSMETIC

Green tea is a familiar herbal tea to us. Nowadays, green tea leaves are considered as an ingredient to produce beverages beneficial for human health and have various applications in cosmetics production. Let’s explore the uses of green tea extract in cosmetics with PEROMA.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION ABOUT GREEN TEA LEAVES

Tea, also known as camellia sinensis, originates from Asia. The major tea belt originates from an ecological region shaped like a fan, between the Naga, Manipuri, and Lushai hills, along the border between Assam and Myanmar to the West, crossing through China to the East, and running southward through the hills of Myanmar and Thailand to Vietnam, spanning from 95 to 120 degrees east longitude, and from 29 to 11 degrees north latitude.

In Vietnam, tea is concentrated in the midland and mountainous provinces in the North such as Son La, Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho, Tuyen Quang, and in the Central Highlands region such as Lam Dong, Gia Lai. Based on morphology, tea in Vietnam can be divided into 4 varieties: Small-leaved Chinese tea (Camellia sinensis var. bohea); Large-leaved Chinese tea (Camellia sinensis var. macrophylla); Shan tea (Camellia sinensis var. Shan); Indian tea (Camellia sinensis var. assamica). In general, tea is a perennial woody shrub, with single leaves, growing alternately, having a characteristic aroma; the leaf blade is tough and thick, elliptical with a rounded apex and a rounded or tapered base. Typically, farmers harvest fresh tea shoots consisting of 1 bud and 2 leaves for processing.

From a tea plant, based on the degree of oxidation during processing, tea is typically divided into 3 main groups: Green tea (non-oxidized), Oolong tea (partially oxidized), and Black tea (fully oxidized).

According to published research results, green tea extracts leaves contain components such as polyphenols, methylxanthines, amino acids, vitamins, etc. Additionally, the polyphenol content in green tea is the highest among tea types. Among these polyphenols, compounds believed to have the highest concentration are catechins. The most important catechins are epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and epicatechin (EC). Furthermore, other catechins also exist in lower concentrations, such as gallocatechin, epigallocatechin digallate, 3-methylepicatechin gallate, catechin gallate, and gallocatechin gallate.

THE USES OF GREEN TEA EXTRACT IN COSMETICS

The antioxidant and anti-aging properties of green tea extract

EGCG found in green tea extract provides excellent antioxidant effects. EGCG in green tea helps limit the oxidation of lipid compounds as well as photodegradation processes when exposed to sunlight. Additionally, catechins have the ability to prevent the generation of free radicals and eliminate free radicals produced in the body such as hydroxyl radicals, superoxide radicals, and lipid radicals (e.g., alkoxyl radicals, peroxyl radicals, and alkyl radicals).

Polyphenolic compounds in tea, after permeating into the skin, help increase the production of enzymes such as catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase. These enzymes have the ability to break down hydroperoxide compounds, protecting the body from cell damage caused by oxidative stress, thereby slowing down the aging process of the skin.

The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of green tea extract

In vitro studies have shown that green tea extract has excellent anti-inflammatory properties through mechanisms that create anti-inflammatory reactions by activating the Nrf2 nuclear factor pathway and increasing the antioxidant levels of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) protein. This helps combat inflammation, prevent acne, and inhibit bacteria on the skin.

In a study on spinal cord injury in mice by adjusting the anti-inflammatory reactions, Khalatbary AR, Ahmadvand found that EGCG in green tea has the ability to control anti-inflammatory reactions by reducing TNF-α, IL-1β, Nitrotyrosine, iNOS, COX-2 and preventing myelin degradation.

In a study by Yan Ru Wu, EGCG in green tea was also found to have sustained anti-inflammatory effects on fibroblasts in human skin.

Green tea extract also demonstrates antibacterial activity against most oral bacteria. Additionally, it can enhance the activity of peroxidase, preventing the formation and progression of periodontal disease.

Green tea extract helps protect the skin against UV rays

EGCG inhibits the formation of hydrogen peroxide in keratinocytes exposed to ultraviolet (UV) A rays and reduces the formation of hydrogen peroxide and DNA damage caused by UVB rays.

Moreover, EGCG also shows the ability to prevent UVB-induced sunburn and UV A-induced collagen degradation on mouse skin.

Through research, green tea extract has shown excellent UV protection capabilities by reducing the impact of UV-B rays on the skin by reducing myeloperoxidase activity, inhibiting excessive neutrophil production, which causes skin darkening due to sunburn, and reducing the likelihood of skin cancer in mice.

With such remarkable benefits, green tea extract is always a top priority for natural extract products. To meet the demand for high-quality, safe, and consumer-oriented products, PEROMA Vietnam Co., Ltd. has conducted research and developed liquid green tea extract products (used in cosmetics).
