Ageratum Conyzoides, commonly found in Vietnam, is referred to by various names such as “co hoi,” “cay bu xich,” “co cut lon,” and more. It holds numerous health benefits and medicinal uses. Let’s explore Ageratum Conyzoides essential oil in the following article with PEROMA.
INTRODUCTION TO AGERATUM CONYZOIDES
Ageratum Conyzoides, also known as Pigsty Flower, Five-Taste Flower, or Goat Weed, is a small plant with soft, hairy stems, reaching a height of about 25-50 cm. It grows wild everywhere, especially in rural areas. The flowers are small and purple or blue. The plant thrives in various types of soil and can be found in fields across the country. Traditional wisdom has passed down its supportive role in treating sinusitis.
According to Traditional Vietnamese Medicine, Ageratum Conyzoides has a spicy and bitter taste, a cooling nature, and it enters the lungs and heart meridians. It is known for its heat-clearing, detoxifying, antiseptic, and diuretic properties. It is used to support the treatment of fever, inflammatory conditions, swelling, heat, redness, and pain, as well as hot abscesses within the body. Additionally, it aids in treating issues related to the uterus and uterine tumors. Its most notable function is in supporting the treatment of sinusitis and allergic rhinitis. This is where the essential oil of Ageratum Conyzoides plays a crucial role.
The entire plant of Ageratum Conyzoides contains a high concentration of essential oil (about 0.16% concentrated oil), ranging from light yellow to turmeric yellow, with a pleasant aroma. The essential oil includes cadinene, caryophyllene, geratocromen, demetoxygeratocromen, and other chemical components. Animal experiments have shown its anti-inflammatory, anti-edematous, and anti-allergic effects in both acute and chronic phases.
USES OF AGERATUM CONYZOIDES ESSENTIAL OIL
Support for Sinusitis and Allergic Rhinitis
Ageratum Conyzoides Essential Oil has proven anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Due to its effective antibacterial and anti-inflammatory nature, it is highly efficient in minimizing sinusitis – a condition caused by inflammation of the sinuses near the nose, often due to infection. Traditional remedies using Ageratum Conyzoides have historically utilized the plant to alleviate sinusitis.
Support for Swollen and Painful Ears
Pustules that appear on the body start small and gradually swell, becoming hot to the touch, red, and difficult to move. In the past, according to folk wisdom, people used to take the entire Ageratum Conyzoides plant, clean it, crush it into small pieces, add some salt, and apply it to the area with pustules, securing it with a bandage. This was done once a day until the swelling subsided. Nowadays, using a blend of Ageratum Conyzoides Essential Oil with carrier oil and gently applying it to the affected area serves the same purpose.
Support for Minimizing Eczema, Scabs, Bleeding Wounds, Ulcers, and Chapping
Ageratum Conyzoides Essential Oil has demonstrated excellent anti-inflammatory and antibacterial abilities. Its potent antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties make it highly effective in reducing wounds caused by bacteria, such as scabs and bleeding wounds.
HOW TO USE AGERATUM CONYZOIDES ESSENTIAL OIL
Nasal Drops:
Put 5-6 drops of Ageratum Conyzoides Essential Oil into 10ml of 0.9% saline solution.
Shake well and instill 2-3 drops into each nostril, three times a day.
You can also add a few drops to your face mask for inhalation when outdoors.
Nasal Spray:
Use an empty spray bottle (with a removable cap), or repurpose an empty bottle.
Add 0.9% saline solution to the bottle and approximately 20 drops of Five-Leaf Grass Flower Essential Oil.
Shake well and spray 2-3 times into each nostril, three times a day.
Nasal Steam Inhalation:
Add about 5-7 drops of Five-Leaf Grass Flower Essential Oil to a cup of boiling water.
Create a makeshift funnel using stiff paper, leaving a small hole. Hold it over the cup, cover one nostril, and inhale deeply through the other nostril to allow the steam with essential oil to enter.
Repeat for 5-10 minutes daily.
For Severe Sinusitis:
Soak a cotton swab with a small amount of Ageratum Conyzoides Essential Oil and apply it to the nostrils. For those with middle ear inflammation, apply it to the ears.
Initially, it may be uncomfortable, and some may experience pain, but afterward, the thick mucus or pus inside may be expelled, providing relief from pain and inflammation.
For Babies with Runny Nose:
Dilute 1 drop of Ageratum Conyzoides Essential Oil in 20ml of 0.9% saline solution.
Use a nasal aspirator or a nasal spray bottle to clean the baby’s nose. Use 10ml each time, and if the baby’s nose is very congested, you can use it twice with 20ml (warm the solution before spraying).
NOTES WHEN USING AGERATUM CONYZOIDES ESSENTIAL OIL
As the essential oil does not dissolve in water, it must be WELL SHAKEN before use to ensure even distribution in the saline solution, preventing irritation and enhancing effectiveness.
In the first 5 days of use, you may experience increased nasal discharge because the essential oil stimulates mucus secretion and eliminates bacteria. This effect will diminish over time. Therefore, it is recommended to persist with the treatment for 15 to 20 days (or longer for severe cases). Do not interrupt the treatment midway.
Store the essential oil in a dry place away from direct sunlight.
The essential oil should not be ingested directly and must be diluted.
Avoid applying the oil to the eyes, open wounds, or sensitive skin areas.
This product is intended for use by adults and children aged 2 and above.
For pregnant and breastfeeding women: Consult with a doctor before using this product.
