INTRODUCTION TO TARO
Taro is a plant with both corms and cormels. The corms weigh from 1.5 to over 2 kg, with few cormels and a high starch content. In Vietnam, there are many varieties of taro, such as green taro, white taro, purple taro, pink taro, mint taro, wax taro, lotus taro, fragrant taro, elusive taro, and more. In the northern region, taro is mainly cultivated in mountainous and midland provinces, while it is less grown in low-lying areas prone to flooding due to susceptibility to rotting.
Taro contains a rich array of nutrients, including organic compounds, minerals, and essential vitamins for good health. It is a food source that provides a significant amount of fiber and carbohydrates, as well as vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin B6, folate, and minerals like magnesium, iron, zinc, phosphorus, potassium, manganese, and copper. Additionally, taro also provides a small amount of protein to the body, although it is not a significant source of protein.
BENEFITS OF TARO FOR HEALTH
- Promotes Digestion
One of the significant benefits of taro is its ability to stimulate digestion in the body. Taro contains approximately 27% of the daily recommended fiber intake. Therefore, it is highly beneficial in supporting a healthy digestive system.
- Prevents Cancer
Taro plays an important role in antioxidant activity in the body, contributing to cancer prevention. It is rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, and other phenolic antioxidants that enhance the immune system and eliminate harmful free radicals from the body.
- Beneficial for Blood Pressure and Heart Health
Taro contains a significant amount of potassium, which is one of the essential minerals needed for maintaining overall health and daily functioning. Potassium not only facilitates the transportation of fluids between membranes and tissues in the body but also helps reduce tension and pressure on blood vessels and arteries. By relaxing veins and blood vessels, potassium helps lower blood pressure and reduce stress on the cardiovascular system.
